The drainage system underneath a synthetic turf installation is the most consequential engineering decision in the entire project — and it is also the decision most frequently skipped or undersized by contractors who are optimizing for installation cost rather than system longevity. In the upper Texas coast area, this is particularly consequential because the rainfall volumes, the flat topography, and the Beaumont clay subgrade create a drainage challenge that simply does not exist in the same combination in drier or hillier parts of Texas.
The basic principle is straightforward: water that cannot move through the turf surface and out of the base aggregate fast enough will accumulate under the surface, saturate the base, eliminate the drainage capacity that the aggregate was designed to provide, and create the conditions for base failure and backing material degradation. A turf system with functional drainage handles tropical rainfall events without issue. A system with inadequate drainage begins failing from the first major rain event, even if the turf surface itself is a premium product.
For upper-coast properties, the drainage design must account for three specific scenarios: the normal rainfall drainage load that the system sees weekly during the May through October rainy season; the peak tropical event load from a four to six inch per day rainfall event; and in some cases the flood inundation scenario where the system is submerged and must recover its drainage function after flood recession. Each of these scenarios has different design requirements, and the drainage infrastructure that handles the normal weekly load may be completely inadequate for a tropical event or inundation scenario.
Standalone drainage system installation — installing drainage infrastructure under an existing turf surface that was originally installed without adequate drainage, or upgrading drainage capacity on an older system — is a service that requires careful assessment of whether the existing turf can be lifted and re-installed without damage. For turf in acceptable structural condition, we can often lift edge sections, install drainage infrastructure, and re-install the turf without a full removal and replacement. For turf that is degraded or cannot tolerate the mechanical stress of lifting without damage, the drainage correction is combined with a turf replacement scope.
